Water Safety
Water safety means safety around any kind of water, not just a pool.
Approxiamately 5,000 people drown each year. For every drowning that
occurs, it is estimated that there are four near-drownings that result
in hospitalization.
Drownings may occur during swimming, boating, fishing,or while taking a
bath. Small children can drown in a bucket or toilet seat! The Key to
being safe in and around water, is to learn how to swim and learn how to
perform CPR.
- Never swim alone. By swimming with a friend you can check on each
other and get help as needed.
- Learn to swim. If you don't know how to swim take swimmimg lessons
before you get into the water on your own.
- Read and follow all rules posted outside of pools and beaches.
- Swim in supervised areas, with adult supervision.
- Swim in designated swimming areas.
- When swimming in ponds, lakes and rivers, swim in clear water which is
free of weeds and debris. Watch out for sharp rocks and glass.
